Charities and non-profits have unique legal needs, and benefit from having lawyers who focus on this sector. Our newly-launched firm can provide the services and advice your organisation needs.

After practicing for many years with De Jager Volkenant & Company, our lawyers have set up a new law firm in Cloverdale in 2024. Our vision is the same: to serve charity and non-profit organizations and enable and empower them to achieve their purposes.

Our firm also meets the legal needs of a variety of businesses and individuals, many of whom we have connected with through our work in the non-profit sector. We can provide comprehensive legal services, for real estate transactions, employment matters, corporate matters, and much more. All legal services are provided by a law corporation.

Luke A. Johnson

Founder

I grew up in and around charities. After finishing law school, I was pleased to learn that lawyers could develop a whole career focused on meeting the legal needs of charities – and the people who run them.

My work now consists of providing practical, strategic legal advice to charities, non-profit organizations, businesses and individuals in the areas of charity law, corporate/commercial law, and wills and estates. This means helping with charity applications, CRA compliance audits, real estate transactions and developments, governance reviews, estate planning, and more. The charitable sector provides an endless variety of work.

I have worked with organizations across the voluntary sector including churches, care facilities, sports organizations, private foundations, housing providers, schools, and international development agencies.

I was admitted to the British Columbia Bar in 2008. I worked for sixteen years at De Jager Volkenant, becoming a partner in this charity law firm before deciding to set up a new firm in 2024. In 2007, I completed my law degree at the University of British Columbia, where I volunteered for several years with the student legal advice program and participated in the Oxford International Intellectual Property Moot at Oxford University. Before turning to law, I graduated from Trinity Western University with a degree in communications and English literature, worked for several charitable organizations, taught English in China, and operated a martial arts studio.

I now live with my wife and children in South Delta, and enjoy reading, cycling, and playing guitar and bass in my limited spare time.

Charles De Jager

Associate Counsel
Charles retired from the practice of law on December 31, 2025. Charles was called to the B.C. Bar in 1986. In 2000 Charles and Ken Volkenant founded De Jager Volkenant, a leading charity and non-profit law firm, where he practiced as senior litigation counsel until that firm wound up its operations on October 31, 2024. Charles then practiced with L. Johnson Law Group as Associate Counsel until his retirement. During his 40 years practicing law throughout British Columbia, Charles advised and represented a large and diverse group of charitable and non- profit organizations in a wide variety of matters including CRA audits, Society issues, employment and human rights, education, privacy and wills and estates issues often using mediation to secure resolutions of these matters. During his many years of practice, Charles developed extensive expertise and experience in charitable and non-profit law and also served on a number of boards. In retirement Charles will continue to serve on a number of boards and plans to spend more time with his wife, Joyce, their children and grandchildren, travel more and enjoy outdoor activities.

Darry Way

Employment and Litigation

I am an advocate who prioritizes my clients’ needs and was called to the Bar in British Columbia in 2020. I chose to become a lawyer as I wanted to help others solve problems and achieve goals. I attended University of Victoria as it was the only Canadian law school to offer a co-op program. My four co-op terms were all in public law and I continue to desire to provide legal services which further the public interest.

My advocacy experience has included civil litigation and tax matters. Most recently I have maintained a broad litigation practice with a focus on positive outcomes for my clients in commercial and civil disputes. I have acted for corporate and individual clients in a range of matters, including contract enforcement, fraud, oppression, debt recovery, and defamation. My focus on litigation has led to appearances in the British Columbia Supreme Court and Court of Appeal and regular appearances in chambers. Prior to articling with a tax litigation firm, I worked as a tax preparer, policy analyst, and agent with the Canada Revenue Agency.

I am dedicated to serving the community and often assist self-represented individuals at the courthouse. I seek further opportunities to educate and provide pro-bono legal services to individuals and organizations.

During my leisure time, I enjoy spending quality moments with my children, collecting related media in multiple formats, finding unique menu items, and being entertained at comedy shows and live theatre. I am also an avid rugby fan and spend weekends overlanding in my SUV or wheeling my Jeep TJ.
